Austin Air Case Study

Brown University study compares the cost-effective benefit of installing an air purifier in a classroom setting to reducing class size by seven students.

In the fall of 2015, the largest gas leak in U.S. history occurred at Aliso Canyon, just outside of Los Angeles in southern California. The harmful methane leak began that October and continued for four months.

HOW THE RESIDENTS
WERE PROTECTED 

As a local state of emergency rolled-on, over 15,000 residents were displaced with many complaining of headaches, nausea, and severe nosebleeds caused by a high concentration of methane. Understandably, the gas leak also provoked great concern among school officials as numerous schools were located within the vicinity of the leak.

To address some of this concern, the school district and the owner of the gas well, the Southern California Gas Company, placed medical-grade HEPA air filters in every classroom, office and common area in all schools within eight kilometres of the leak. These actions provided a unique opportunity to assess and research the benefits of air filtration for students, teachers and school officials.

Four years after the leak, using Aliso Canyon as a case-study, world-renowned research institute Brown University reported that medical-grade HEPA air filters in schools led to impressive and measurable benefits. Brown University published that installing medical-grade HEPA air filters in schools substantially removes pollutants in the learning environment1. It found that this straightforward intervention raises student achievement, increasing test scores in the core subjects of mathematics and English.

The results from Brown University clearly indicate that medical-grade HEPA air filter installation is a highly cost-effective policy to improve student learning, leading to several other knock-on benefits. It reports that the per-year cost to install and maintain medical-grade HEPA air filters throughout a school is around $600-$700 US per class.

Given the large test score increases they generate, installing medical-grade HEPA air filters substantially outperforms other education reforms such as class size reduction on a cost-benefit basis.
